Nature Park Velebit – the mythical home of the Fairies of Velebit
Velebit perhaps is not the highest mountain range but in many ways it is ”the most”. With a length of 145km it is the longest Croatian mountain,with as much as a 2000 sq.m area.Velebit is by far the biggest protected area of Croatia,longer than any of the other protected areas together (’78 UNESCO : World Biosphere Reserve, ’81 Nature Park).
Within the park there are several specially protected localities : 2 National parks (North Velebit, Paklenica) the strict and special reserve (Hajdučki and Rožanski ledges, Zavižan);our most beautiful and most significant caves (Cerovačke caves, Lukina pit ) the most numerous endemic species (Degenia Velebitica) the most varied and rich karst fenonmenom and the most beautiful landscape.
Teaching,bicycle and mountain trails alpanism,speleology, bird-watchingand rafting are just some of the activities on offer.
