For many people, the Church of St Krševan is the most beautiful of our romanesque churches. It is a monastery church and male Benedictine monastery ; dedicated in1175.It is a triple neved basilica which finishes with three richly decorated (open gallery, arcade with columns of cubic capitals ) and a half-circled apse.Tha nave is divided by ancient columns and pilasters. The main altar was built in 1701 as the fulfillment of a pledge taken by the people of Zadar against the plague of 1632. Four white marble statues which represent the patron saints of Zadar :Stošija,Krševan, Šime and zoila were added later. Besides the church there are remains of a Benedictine monastery from the Middle Ages which was destroyed in World War II, as well as the bell-tower begun in 1485 but never completed.
