The Church of St Donat

  • donat

The Church of St Donat is the most well-known of Zadar’s monuments .It is a 9th century circular-shaped building

This church is a representation of the so-called ”court chapels” but it is unique in the fact that it does not have a direct model ( as it is supposed the Palatinska chapel in Aachen has ).
Originally this church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, but from the 15th century it took the name of Zadar’s Bishop Donat, who had it built.
Especially interesting are its foundations, where antic material was used and can clearly be seen-fragments of columns, Architrava and sacrificial altar with the inscriptions of victims. The interior contains origianal columns and stone slabs from the Roman Forum on which the church was directly built. Today it is no longer used for religious purposes but serves as a venue for many musical events because of its excellent acoustics, among which is the festival ”Musical Evenings in Donat”.
