The Cathedral of St Stošija is the biggest cathedral in Dalmatia. It is a triple nave Romanesque cathedral which was built in two stages during the 12th and 13th centuries later restored (after damage in the IV Crusade in 1202 ).It was built on the site of the old-Christian basilica of St Peter the Apostle from the 6th century. The name it has today was given because of the power of the martre Stošija from Srijem ( Anastasia ) whose ashes are kept in a marble sarcophag in the north alter apse. It has a recognisable late-romanesque face :perfect harmony of the horizontal and vertical lines with a rose-window which rivals those from Pisa and Luce. The facade was widened in 1324. The interior of the cathedral is also monumental : the central nave is three times wider than the lateral, above the 12th century crypt there is a raised presbytery with choir stalls in flowery Gothic style ( Matej Moranzano ),and several richly decorated lateral altars. The oldest part of the cathedral is the vestry (Chapel of St Barbara) and the 5th century floor mozaic as well as the hexaconchal font dating from the 6th century which was completely destroyed during the air-.raids in 1943 ,but restored again in 1989. The ground floor and first floor bell-tower was built in 1452 and the upper floor in 1892 and styled on the bell-tower in Rab by the English architect T.G Jackson.
